The Champions League is organized by UEFA (Union of European Football Associations), the controlling force of European football. The football club that wins the Champions League receives the European Champion Club trophy, which is considered the most prestigious club trophy.

How much money do you get for winning the Champions League?

The tournament began in 1955 when the teams played two games, and the winning team started the next round of the competition. In 1997 the tournament was renamed the UEFA Champions League. The championship in its current format is open to league champions from all UEFA member associations. FC Real Madrid and AC Milan have won the competition three times.

In 1958, 23 of 44 passengers on board, players from the Manchester United football team who flew home from the European Cup match against Yugoslavia, were killed in the Munich plane disaster. After the tragedy, the team ended the season and reached the FA Cup final.
